He knew I missed having a piano in the home, so he went to a music shop and bought me a new piano. While I appreciated the gesture, it wasn't a very high quality piano. We went ahead and returned it to the shop. Meanwhile, my dad scanned the want ads in Las Vegas. An old jazz musician was sick and dying and had listed his 1908 Steinway upright. It wasn't much more than what my husband had paid for the new piano, so we told my dad to go ahead. It took us a few months to get it moved to Lehi, but i was elated to have a piano in my home (a duplex). Don't know how excited my neighbors were though. We eventually returned to Vegas and had a family. With the busy days and remodeling our home, the piano got pushed to the side. I started my children in piano lessons though because I wanted them to learn to play. For several months they practiced on a small 24\" keyboard. As they progressed, I knew it was time to unbury the piano sitting in the other room. They were so excited. I pulled out my favorite sheet music and played and played. They quickly found their favorite songs and made requests each night. They progressed so well in their lessons, they were soon playing those same songs. It was wonderful to see their determination in working through each of these songs in my old piano. Fast forward several years, my daughter began teaching piano in her teens. The piano was getting tired. I contacted someone local and I was told it wasn't worth fixing unless it holds sentimental value. I've vascilated back and forth. I was almost ready to make the plunge when the past year brought several surprises with two vehicle replacements and some unexpected dental work. I'd love to have the piano restored. It is sentimental. It almost feels like a member of the family. My children can't fathom getting a newer model. My grandfather was a grandson to the 3rd President of the church, John Taylor. It seemed natural, with the music in my family, for me to begin piano lessons at 5 yrs old and continue through my teens. With a small amount of beginning instruction from a cousin, and a good ear, my sister and I began to figure out how to play the guitar. We were encouraged to sing together and learned to harmonize and in our late teens we began to perform. We sang in a number of USO shows, performed in church events, and spent hours and hours practicing music after school. It was central to our healing from our parents’ divorce and later, managing mom’s remarriage. I married at 19, and we moved to Utah so my husband could attend BYU. Later, we were asked by his employer (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), for whom he worked in accounting, to take our 6 children plus one on the way, to go live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. While we were there, our piano, a 6’ Steinway Parlor Grand, was in the house we were assigned to live in, and we were given the opportunity to buy her when many of our expatriate friends went home. We were there 6 years and were blessed to have two more children during our 6 years stay. Sadly, our youngest passed away there from a drowning accident a few months before we left. The grief from that experience led to the breakdown of our sweet family. I have memories of all of my children learning to play the piano on this piano. The first one born there and her older sister used to sit on the sides of the music holder piece while I played. The last one would play underneath the piano prior to her death. I’ve needed money since then but have held on to this precious physical reminder of the youngest that we lost there. After the loss of our little one, I worked very hard as a single mother completing a BS degree, a Masters in Social Work and finally a doctorate degree in psychology. My energy has been focused on helping couples, families and those suffering from trauma or grief and loss. I have worked hard but have never been able to save enough extra money to do much more than pay for our basic needs and expenses. I know our piano needs some work to bring her to her best and hope to someday get the work done she deserves. Meanwhile, I am our ward organist, which I enjoy very much. I’ve also had grandchildren enjoy playing our piano. \u003cbr\u003eThis piano came into our possession in 1986 in a Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is a 6’ Steinway parlor grand. All of my children except the youngest two have had lessons on this piano. We had a little work done by artisans in Buenos Aires, in 1990 prior to moving back to the United States. She’s accompanied us to Georgia, California, and Utah, during several moves. She now has a permanent place in a bedroom turned parlor in my home in Spanish Fork. We became her owners nearly 40 years ago. We have many family memories surrounding this piano. She came into the possession of the LDS church prior to our obtaining her. I am told that this is an unusual model. The dates inside show 1859-1878. This is the data I have, but I have been told that there is some significant work that needs to be done. The most meaningful things to me about this piano is that all of my children, most grandchildren and even a couple of great grandchildren have played this piano. For me, though, during the days and weeks after the passing of our youngest, I would play for hours on end, many days not even changing out of my nightgown, even as friends and neighbors stopped to share their love and condolences . She is my go to friend, my resource, and an emotional support better than any emotional support animal, or even therapist. But has been so wonderful! \u003cbr\u003eI don’t know the exact year of the piano. But my Mom told stories of her sitting at the piano, with her buckle shoes scratching the bench. She was born in 1939, so I’m guess it’s around 1943? My grandparents, Leo and Lida Cordon, had started a company, growing, harvesting, grinding and bottling their own horseradish, Cordon’s Horseradish, which you can still buy at any Associated Food grocery store. My grandma loved piano music, but up until then, didn’t have enough money for a piano. When Cordon’s started to be successful, my grandpa bought her this Acrosonic piano. She loved and played it often, especially on Sundays, where her and her husband and all 9 children would gather in the living room for music playing and singing. My grandma gave piano lessons out of her home for years to come. When she passed in 1974, my grandpa couldn’t bear to keep it. It was too painful to see. My mom brought it to our home, where I wouldn’t be born for 5 more years. It’s always been a permanent fixture at home. I started piano lessons at the age of 5. I remember the red piano book, (that I had colored in) sitting at the top of, what seemed to be, large piano. I was excited to play, until I realized it wasn’t so easy. But continued lessons for 10 more years. This piano was a friend and an enemy. Anyone who’s played knows the conflicting relationship of piano playing. The last bottom note has always plunked, so you have to pull the cover out a bit to play it. The keys have always been chipped, as I assume the many children that have played at this piano. There have been 24 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren that have climbed and sat at this piano. When my mother passed in 2010, being the only child who could play, I took it to my home. My oldest loves to sit and play for hours at a time. She often tells me how out of tune it is and says we should get all new keys. Knowing the expense and also knowing the history of the piano, I would love to have it restored. I have since studied under a wonderful Dutch organist and had lessons from two Tabernacle organists. I have played many great pipe organs in the US and Europe including the Tabernacle Organ. The piano of my childhood has helped siblings, children and grandchildren and accompanied countless family singing activities. But due to being moved numerous times as work has required, it currently needs a lot of help, more than I can afford . but it is a treasured family heirloom. My father once said it must be made of solid gold since the former location of the original lots is now covered by Harrah’s Club Lake Tahoe. We look forward to building memories with our friends and family around the piano, just like our ancestors would have.\u003cbr\u003eMy great great grandmother, Charlotte “Lottie” Nelson, came from Ireland in 1892 where she joined a cousin and 3 brothers who had immigrated previously. She worked as an upstairs maid for a wealthy family and visited her 3 brothers often who were all married and had families of their own. The afore-mentioned cousin lived nearby as well and was the wife of a minister whom she was very close to. Eventually, Lottie became the nanny to her cousins’ children. Her cousin's husband became ill and was transferred to Jacksonville, FL. It is unknown whether the piano was purchased while in New York or Florida, however she loved to play the piano and was very talented and lively. It was given as a gift to ease her homesickness from being away from her family. In 1896, her cousin's husband, the minister, was transferred to Utah. After a few years in Utah, she was no longer needed as a nanny to her cousin’s children and took a job with a prominent family in Payson as a housekeeper. In 1900 she married the brother of her employer and moved to Provo. Lottie’s husband died in 1928 when she was 54 years old. At the age of 69 she moved in with a daughter, Rachel, in California and moved her beloved piano with her. After her death, in 1945, her other daughter, Effie, inherited the piano. It sat for many years until Effie died. That is when my grandmother traveled from Utah to California to bring the piano to her home in Provo. I remember as a young girl my grandma told me how special the piano was. She loving kept it dusted and told all of us grandkids it wasn’t to be played with. Following the deaths of my grandmother in 1999 and my grandfather in 2015, the family wasn't sure what to do with the piano. It was not in great condition and hadn't been played in many years. I was living in central Illinois at the time and came out to visit. My dad’s siblings had decided it should probably go to the dump because it was in too bad of shape to save and no one else wanted it. But my dad knew if anyone would be willing to save it, it would be me. So, my husband and I rented a U-Haul trailer and towed it back to Illinois and put it in our home. I cleaned it up the best that I could and found that other than a few dead keys, it was playable and in a lot better condition than we previously thought. All of the original pieces were intact, including the stool right down to its original horse hair and velvet upholstery. Our daughter started her first year of piano lessons playing on it in 2018, making the best of it even though it had a few dead keys and was very out of tune. In 2020 we moved back to Utah and brought the piano we had come to love with us, hoping to one day have it able to be played again. There has been a lingering family story that it came across the plains, we are unsure of how it was actually moved here the first time, but it has now traveled across them at least 3 times, fulfilling the tale. We hope to have this piano restored to be able to be loved and played for many more generations. I have even begun piano lessons in the hope that one day I may be able to play as well, along with my children. We had found a beautiful way to share our love of music and the gospel all in one. When my husband and I got married I moved out of my parents house and quickly realized, I didn't have access to a piano and us starving college newly weds couldn't afford one. We would visit my parents on the weekends and spend most of our time in the piano room playing piano, singing, laughing and some times crying. Fast forward a few years, my uncle unexpectedly pass away. He was never married and did not have any children of his own, just all of his nieces and nephews. As my mom and her siblings were clearing out his condo they needed to find a home for my grandmother, Lily May's, piano. I am the only grandchild named after my grandmother so I was the first grandchild ask if I wanted it. My mom knew I would want it for 2 reasons, I missed playing everyday and although I never met my grandmother, I have a very strong connection to her. Of course I said yes and my mom had it moved to our tiny townhome and it filled the entire family room and I loved it! My husband, Aaron, and I grew our family very slowly due to infertility issues. There were many days I would play the piano and sing to find comfort. As soon as our oldest, Andrew, was old enough to take piano lessons he started and he has not stopped since then. He loves to play. Our middle son, Kaison, loves music but learning to play it was too hard for him due to a cognitive issues as a child. He is 15 years old and just started with a piano teacher who decided to try teaching him by ear and he is catching on so quickly and really excited. Our youngest, Lily, just started piano also. She has a beautiful voice and amazing pitch. She is so excited to sit at the piano and practice and sing. These 3 children are miracles in our lives. Andrew recently married his high school sweetheart, Makayla. They are both in school. Makayla is studying music and computer information systems at BYU. Soccer is her sport of choice. She loves to sing and play the piano. Makayla served her mission in Singapore. Andrew is studying chemistry and Chinese at the University of Utah. Andrew has been swimming competitively since he was 10 and has continued to swim at the U since he returned from his mission in England. Kaison is a freshman. He has always been a very active, athletic kid. He never stops moving or doing things. Kaison plays baseball, is a competitive archer and has his own blacksmithing studio. Kaison loves working on our cars. If you need your oil changed or your brakes done, Kaison will volunteer to do them. He will beg you to let him do them. And then there is Lily, she is 10 and she is the star of the show, she's the youngest and she's the only girl! Lily loves doing everything. She does cheerleading, tumbling, softball and swimming. She loves to sing and music is her everything. She loves her brothers, her friends, her family. She loves deep and wants to put a smile on everyone's face when she meets them. If she can't, she will hug you! We love to do things together. Card games are a weekend must, the more friends and family that join us the better. All 3 kids have grown up at the baseball park. Spring and summer is 5 nights a week at the ball park and all day Saturday too and we love it. We love the long road trips to California to catch a game at Angels Stadium and go to Disneyland and spend a day at the beach. Our family is our everything. The piano was given to my grandmother by her brother Frank Stebbins. Frank and his wife Reva had the piano but couldn't get it into the house they were moving into, so they brought it to my mom's house and gave it to Lily May. The piano is a player that you have to pump with your feet. Whew.....what a workout. My mom said they had a lot of reels for it but they (her and her 5 siblings) wore them all out because they loved pretending to play the piano while they were pumping the foot pedals. My Aunt Karen wanted to learn to actually play the piano so badly but they did not have the money for lessons or books so she saved her pennies and eventually had enough money to buy herself a book and she taught herself to play the piano. My mom said that the piano was always being played by someone, visiting family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends. If someone wasn't able to play the piano they would sit down and pump the pedals so the piano would play. When my mom was 8 years, Lily May collapsed and passed away suddenly at home while making dinner with the kids. After Lily May's passing, my Grandpa, Joseph Ford Lucas, met and married my Grandma Idona. She had 2 children and that made a total of 8 kids. Unfortunately , Joseph was in a car accident and passed away from his injuries 2 years after Lily May had passed away. My Grandma Idona was the most amazing woman. She loved and raised all of the kids as if they were her very own. My mom talks about how many things her mothers, Lily May and Idona, had in common and how she knew that Idona was meant to be there to raise them and love them exactly like they would have been by their Mom and Dad. One of the constance things in their life growing up was the piano. It was focal point in the family room of their house and it remained in the same spot in the family room until the day that my Grandma Idona passed away at 76. As grandkids we loved playing the piano at Grandma Idona's house. Mostly we loved crawling under the bench and opening the door and pumping the foot pedals, flipping down the front door and flipping the levers back and forth. As we got older and learned to actually play the piano we would play our songs for Grandma when we would visit her. Eventually the player part of the piano stopped working because the tubes were broken and brittle. When my Grandma Idona passed away and they cleaned out her house, the piano was moved to my Uncle Ivan's condo in Salt Lake. At the time, he was the only one that didn't already have a piano in his home. My uncle didn't play the piano but loved music and as always, when the grand kids would visit him, we would play the piano, even though it had not been tuned in years and mostly sounded like an out of tune bar piano. Uncle Ivan passed away in 2000. As my mom and her siblings were clearing out his condo they needed to find a home for my grandmother, Lily May's, piano. I am the only grandchild named after my grandmother so I was the first grandchild ask if I wanted it. My mom knew I would want it for 2 reasons, I missed playing everyday and although I never met my grandmother in this life, I have a very strong connection to her. Of course I said yes and my mom had it moved to our tiny townhome and it filled the entire family room and I loved it! The piano was showing it's age and neglect so we started to clean it. I spent days working on it. I cleaned it, I polished the wood, I cleaned the keys. I was so excited. All the cleaning and polishing in the world couldn't fix the things inside the piano to make it sound better. I called someone to come and tune it but much to my sadness I was told that it need over $1000 of repairs and it still wouldn't be completely tuned. My husband and I couldn't afford the repairs, we could barely afford the tuning. I tried to play it but it was hard because it was so out of tune and some of the keys were sticking I eventually stopped playing it and then life got busy. When we moved into our current house I decided to contact Brigham Larson to have the piano looked and get a quote for getting some things repaired so it would play better. I had low expectations that I would be able to get it fixed. I don't remember exactly who came to tune the piano from Brigham Larson but they were amazing. They let us know that there were some small repairs that could be done and a few tunings over time and it would be so much better. I was so excited. Our oldest son had started piano lessons and it was so exciting to hear him playing the piano and hear that rich sound that reminded me of my childhood at my grandma's house. As the years have passed along the piano has started to show even more age but my kids continue to play it regularly for fun and for lessons. Our youngest and only daughter, Lily May, is named after my Grandma, just as I was. Just before Lily was born, I knew that she was going to be the closest connection I was going to have to my Grandma Lily May, who I never got to meet. I had this most peaceful feeling and comfort to know that Grandma Lily May and Grandma Idona were having the greatest time with this sweet baby just before she came to our family. Lily loves the stories about Lily May and loves looking through all of the pictures and she has such a fondness for Lily May. Lily just started taking piano lessons and is so excited to be learning on Great-Grandma Lily May's piano. This piano has such deep meaning for my family and for my mom's family. My cousins love seeing it when ever we get together at our house. It makes me sad that I have not been able to restore it to the beautiful instrument that it is meant to be. I have always hoped to be able to restore it and pass it along to my daughter when she gets older and be chosen to have our piano restored would be the most amazing gift. To keep this beautiful family heirloom and pass it on to generations would be the greatest way to honor a family legacy of unconditional love and strength. The Krakauer piano was a wedding gift to my great grandmother in 1891, given to her in New York. When the family moved to central California the piano was shipped to the Panama inlet, then off-loaded from the ship to an overland stage. It was carried west to the Pacific where it again was loaded onto a ship and sailed to the San Francisco Bay where it was off-loaded again and brought to the Ripon, California Tener family ranch. My great grandmother enjoyed it until passing it down to her daughter-in-law, my grandmother. She played it with family gathering all around, and then passed it down to her daughter, my aunt. My aunt left it to my cousin. Unfortunately, my cousin passed too soon, and her husband offered it to the family. I ultimetly took possession of the piano and it resides in my son's home for my two grandkids to enjoy. They are the sixth generation to use and enjoy this beautiful, grand, oak cabinet piano. One of the mystical highlights was, prior to wrapping up the piano for the move, I asked Mr. Larson if he would play a tune. As if guided by all the hands that played on it before, he struck up a rendition of \" Danny Boy,\" which happens to be our families' favorite song, the Irish eyes were tearful! Or listening to the piano being played while us young kids would stoke the fire in the fireplace with all the mail our grandpa would let us burn. I especially remember holidays filled with all kinds of music and fun to go along with the piano. My father and some cousins played the violin, my mother would play the guitar, there was a pump organ we would all try our hands at, and occasionally we would pull out my grandpa's old military trumpet which always brought laughs. I also remember really funny small memories about the piano. My Grandma had a little white ceramic nativity scene on the top of the piano every year for Christmas. My dad would always change out the baby Jesus with a toy troll with tall hair and see how long it would take for my grandma to realize it, get mad at him and change it back to the baby Jesus, just for him to do it all over again. I would listen to their grandfather clock chime and would try to find that key on the piano. I know all my aunts, uncles, parents, cousins and siblings all have their own wonderful memories of our beloved Evan and Joan and this family piano. It would be our dream to be able to continue the legacy of music our Grandparents instilled in us through this piano, for many years to come. But unfortunately this piano is falling into disrepair because of its age and use despite best efforts to keep it tuned, polished and fixed. As a result, I can probably play any 50’s song on the piano. To this day, I am not an accomplished piano player and I cant read music, but I can play. I can sit down and play melodies that are pleasing to me. I have written several songs and found joy in that. Life has been busy and there are times and even months or years that go by, without having time to play and write and enjoy the piano as I once did, but when I do find time to be by myself and to simply sit and play, it is like an old friend coming to visit. We can remember the old times or we can work on new memories and melodies. Music and musical instruments can be enjoyed by many and not just those who have become experts or masters at it. I fall in that category of an unordinary piano player, with an unordinary love for pianos.\u003cbr\u003eI have several pianos. One was the piano my mother learned to play the piano on as a teenager. Her parents bought the used piano just for her to learn, despite their meager circumstances. The upright piano still has the old tuning notes inside the piano dating back to the 1940s. I have a baby grand that my parents bought in the 1960s that I learned to play on. My mother and father would ask me to play for them in the evenings, when they were winding down at the end of long day with 9 children to raise. i would play soft melodies and watch as they would relax and sometimes even dose a little. My mother passed away when I was 12 and the piano reminds me of her. After her passing, my father would find even more solace in asking me to play for him in the evenings by himself and so the piano reminds me of him also. When our family moved from California to Hawaii after the passing of my mother, this piano came with us and was my reminder of happier days back home in California. Years later, after I was married, my older brother offered the piano to me and it was like having your favorite pet dog back with me for life, with the assurance that he would never die! I have had the piano now in my life for 58 years and it is my favorite piano. We have an old 1872 Steinway, that sits in your warehouse, because of the kindness of Brigham, who offered to let us keep it there until a future day when we could restore it, or perhaps he would have a buyer who would want to buy it. We had it in our home for several years but found that we could not keep it tuned very well. It needs help. But the sound is deep and rich and fabulous when it is tuned. It is made of Brazilian rosewood and is one of the most beautiful looking pianos you will ever see. I bought it for a large sum of money early in my marriage from Bill Harris. He said to have purchased it from BYU, but I have not sought to verify this. I would one day love to restore the inside of that piano and thus why I am entering in this contest. It had a sign on it the said $500 o.b.o. Of course the cabinet doesn't tell me what the sound is like. I start to play \"Malaguena\" and I loved it. The owner said that they were the third owners and his daughter only played it little. And that the previous owner to him said they played it very little. He said it was a 1912 Lester. I loved the sound and was just a little bit excited about the possibility of owning it. We purchased it and had a moving company get it to our home. This piano has moved from Washington to Oregon and then here to Utah. I have had it through my husbands deployments and the growing of our family. My kids have learned to play on it. It has been there to be my therapist when I am sad, mad, or just want to get out of my out of my thoughts. We have discussed getting a new one, but whenever I go to look for one nothing sounds or feels like my piano. My husband says that this piano is my best friend. Our younger children are eager to start learning. Unfortunately, I was only able to take piano lessons for about a year before my teacher moved away and my parents could no longer afford the cost of lessons. After I’m done with my schooling, I’m hoping to continue piano lessons for myself. Fortunately, I married a man who loves music and who enjoys learning new songs on the piano. Most recently he purchased the music from Pride and Prejudice, and I’ve been graced with those sounds for the last few months. If our piano is chosen it will benefit my family and future posterity.\u003cbr\u003eOur piano belonged to my great-grandmother, Ruby Spence Archibald. Ruby received it as a gift from her father between 1910-1915. Ruby learned to play and loved sitting down and making music. Ruby’s daughter, my grandmother Carma, was only 3 years old when her mother Ruby passed away. Ruby was 26 years old. The attached photo of the elderly woman in front of the piano is my grandmother’s step-grandmother. My grandma said that her “new” grandma was the nicest person she ever knew. She was thoughtful and kind to my grandma after she lost her mom. My grandmother inherited the piano and learned to play well until her fingers could no longer move due to crippling arthritis. My mother then inherited the piano and it has found it’s way to me. It is passed down to the oldest daughter in each family. One of my children will inherit it one day. Being a mother can feel lonely but every time I sit in our front room and look at my piano, I’m reminded of the women who came before me and I draw strength from them. They all endured hardships and I’m sure that sometimes they wanted to give up... but they didn’t. I know it sounds cliché, but I feel close to heaven in the best way when I’m near or playing this piano. This piano is more than just an instrument. It’s a memory. Restoring it would help me preserve and pass on the memories and stories of my family’s past; Stories of courage, strength, and endurance. Stories of gentleness and love. We know it was passed down to their first daughter, Mary Alice Cannon (1828-1920). Mary Alice had this piano in her home and entertained frequently. She passed the piano down to her daughter (my mother) Elizabeth Hoagland Cannon (1894-1962). My mother Elizabeth Hoagland Cannon was married to Kiefer B Sauls who was the Presidential Assistant and Financial Anchor of BYU for 50 years. I am the only child of Elizabeth and Kiefer and they passed the piano down to me after their passing and it has been in my home ever since. It was originally a shiny black and had the \"Chickering\" label inscribed in swirling gold letters on the front. I refinished the piano to expose the beautiful rosewood, and in doing so it removed the Chickering inscription. Chickering was an American piano manufacturer from Boston Massachusetts. We have loved the piano and would be thrilled to have it restored to its glory.\u003cbr\u003eI do play the piano and had all my children play as well. If I get the piano restored, I plan to give it to a granddaughter Grace Elizabeth Collins Brummer, who plays beautifully. Well the electric was much more valuable than this old heirloom that was hanging on by threads, and taken and beaten up driving across states in a moving van after my parents died. But the electric was the one to go because giving this old one away was like giving up my childhood. I had already lost so much at my young age, that I wasn’t able to give this up too. I have no living family left except my 2 brothers. So when I look at this piano, the memories come alive and a price can never be put on that. But at the same time, with our large family, we just don’t foresee a time we can ever have enough to warrant the “want” to rebuild this. So it remains silent in the corner of our room, only played when the ward choir happened to come and needed a large room to practice in. I still at times play its original keys and sit on the crickety seat, and remember life as it once was years ago. But I hope it can be as special to my kids someday as it was to me. I have 7 kids after all, and only 2 pianos to give. I had forgotten about the dusty old piano in my grandma’s basement, one that hasn’t been played, much less tuned, in two decades. We want to keep the piano in the family and I finally have a place where it can be played and admired. \u003cbr\u003eWe do not know the entire history of this Emerson piano. We don’t know when it was build, but it was definitely before the 1940s. It’s known history started when my grandparents bought the piano in the 70s. It had already been used for decades and restored by the time they bought it. My grandparents had gone looking for a piano and were at a piano store when my grandma saw a piano sitting under a plastic sheet. After revealing the piano under restoration, my grandma became enamored and asked for the old piano. My grandma, mom, and aunts all learned to play the piano using this upright piano. My mom was the only one of the family to continue playing past her childhood and when she married my dad, she took the piano with her. It moved from her childhood home to her first home in Provo, then to Chicago, Park City, Heber, and back to Provo. My older sister also started learning to play on this piano. Music was constantly played in our household. By the time I was old enough to start taking lessons, my parents had bought a baby grand and the older piano was taken to my aunts house. It sat in disuse for a while before it was moved to my grandparents basement, where it has sat, collecting dust, for two decades. They bought this piano from an older couple for $50 that they had for around 50 years for their own kids to play. It hadn’t been tuned for a long time and took some money to get it tuned and working. My mom fixed it up and got it ready for me to play. I played it all growing up and you could tell the mood I was in depending on how fast and loud I was playing the piano. I loved being able to learn to play and sing at the top of my lungs. My siblings didn’t have much interest in music so I inherited this piano about ten years ago from my parents when they moved to a new house. My husband and I drove to visit them in Oregon where I grew up and loaded the piano on a trailer and brought it to my home in Utah. It is an old Lyon and Healy upright grand and it’s beautiful but it definitely needs some fixing up! I would greatly appreciate your help in restoring the inside and outside of this amazing piano so I can continue sharing my heart through my music. Our piano has been there for it all.\u003cbr\u003eOur Meister piano was built in 1907, the same year Carl Larsen, my great-Grandpa, was born. He purchased the piano secondhand in Holliday, Utah during the Great Depression. He bought it used — dirt poor but just had to have it. Music was vital to a happy home, he said. It was on that piano that my grandma Norene, the only girl with four brothers, learned to play. When Norene started writing her brother’s missionary companion, and later married him, she took the piano to their home in Idaho and later to Brigham City and then Kaysville. Her oldest daughter, Christy, took lessons and became very proficient. While in Brigham, Norene’s oldest son, full of childish ambition and benevolence, thought he would be a dear and refinish the piano. Of course he stopped after only a few hours, but the bench still bears testimony to his exuberance if not his endurance. After Christy married and started a home, the piano moved with her to Bountiful, then Oregon, then back to Kaysville. For several years she paid for my piano lessons despite living well below poverty levels. She also used the piano for income, teaching lessons to neighborhood kids to supplement my dad’s income during the early 1990s. Under my stewardship, the piano moved to Provo and then Syracuse. I, too, paid for piano lessons while struggling deeply financially. When Covid hit, our world turned upside down. But my fondest memories (with the piano) were created when I was a teenager. I'd spend hours and hours, sitting at the piano, composing my own music. I was more of a singer, than a pianist, so I used the piano to create arrangements for my original songs. The piano was my happy place. I grew up, and moved away, but the piano stayed in my mom's home, until she passed away in 2017. That's when I inherited the piano. The old ivory keys were very chipped, so my husband and I hired Brigham Larson pianos, to re - key her. A skilled piano craftsman, came to my mother's home to remove the keys. He had to clean out the inside of the piano (which was filled with a hundred years worth of dust) to prepare it for the new keys. As he cleaned out the belly of the piano, he discovered many old coins. The oldest coin, that was found inside the piano, dated back to 1916 (perhaps that's the year that my Grandparents purchased the piano)? My Aunt Marie would have been 3 years old in 1916 I can almost see her (3- year-old-fingers) trying to push those coins between the keys). Once the piano was re - keyed, my husband and I hired Brigham Larson pianos, to move our piano from my mother's home in Orem, to our home in Spanish Fork. Then (at last) I was reunited with my long lost friend. I sat down at the piano, and started to play (for the first time in many years) and as I did, tears ran down my face. The sound of piano music, transported me through time. I felt like I was a teenager again, composing my own music on the piano. I would be overjoyed, if you chose my Grandparents piano for a rebuild. My mom grew up on our family farm in South Jordan, Utah. They met at BYU and married in the Fall of 1973. After they married, they moved back to Tulsa, Oklahoma to start their life together. Having lived her entire life (except for her time at BYU) on the family farm, my mom was horribly homesick. The summer of 1974 my parents were garage saleing when something caught their eye - a gorgeous upright grand piano. My mom wanted it, of course, but they absolutely did not have the $200 to purchase it. So they left it there. My dad, knowing how homesick my mom was, went back and bought the piano - using their grocery money for the month to purchase it. He and his best friend moved it into their apartment where it was waiting for my mom when she got home from work. They had to eat popcorn and ramen noodles for the month. When my parents moved back to the family farm from Oklahoma, the piano came with them. The difference in climate taking a serious toll on the piano. It was on this piano where I (and my siblings) learned to play. I have practiced on and played THIS piano since I was 5 years old. I'm turning 45 this year. When my grandma won a baby grand piano on the Price Is Right (that's a whole other story!!), she gave it to my mom, saying there was no need for a piano that nice to sit in her house when she couldn't play it. So the baby grand was moved to my mom's house. I asked my mom what she was going to do with the upright grand. She said she didn't know. I told her without hesitation, \"I want it!\" She pointed out that I already had a piano (a hand-me-down from I can't even remember where). I reminded her that it was THAT piano that I had played since I was 5 years old. I reminded her that it was THAT piano that Callie and I had learned to play duets on. I reminded her that it was THAT piano that I had played throughout my life. She gave me the piano. Throughout the years piano tuner after piano tuner counseled me to get rid of it and get something newer, but I have refused. They don't make them like this anymore! This desire to learn an instrument remained dormant until I was 15 years old. As I attended church from a young age, I always knew people involved in music ministry, but I never took the initiative to learn from them. However, one day everything changed. I was friends with a guy named Chrystian Barros, and we both participated in the Pathfinder Club, a voluntary project for children and teenagers of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Chrystian was taking classical piano lessons, but at the time, his hobby didn't seem very relevant to me. On a rainy Saturday night, while the church's youth team was preparing decorations for the service, my older sister and I arrived early. I sat on the church bench, observing people moving around and chatting. Chrystian greeted me and sat down at the piano, a Fritz Dobbert 1\/4 tail model that is still in the church today. When he started playing, I became completely disconnected from reality and could only see and hear the piano. He played the first series of arpeggios from Sonata Op. 27 No. 2, \"Moonlight,\" followed by the second half of the third movement, \"Presto Agitato.\" I was completely absorbed and moved by Beethoven's music at that moment, and it changed my life forever. It was a turning point, making me realize my passion for music and the piano. After that significant moment, I started searching for the \"Moonlight Sonata\" on YouTube, a journey that took several days until I finally found it. During this search, I discovered other composers like Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bach, Schumann, Mozart, and finally, Beethoven. It was a discovery of a new universe and the awakening of a purpose in my life. Due to my enthusiasm, I asked my father for a 66-key keyboard, exchanging an old video game for this instrument. I started learning on my own, mastering simple pieces and, out of instinct and inexperience, attempting more complex songs. Over time, I developed good skills for someone learning entirely on their own and by instinct. We then decided to look for a private piano teacher, and my lessons began. It was a wonderful experience going through Bach's Inventions, Czerny's studies, Clementi's sonatinas, and reaching Mozart's sonatas. My teacher, a multi-instrumentalist, had a student orchestra, which gave me the opportunity to participate in recitals and performances with the orchestra. My private teacher told me to take the test to enter the Conservatory of Music of the State of São Paulo - EMESP Tom Jobim, and because I liked the idea, I studied theory for a few months and prepared the pieces requested in the edict - and I passed! It was tremendous happiness; I was very moved to know that I had passed both phases of the test, and the board of teachers of a very high level had liked my performance even with little time on the instrument. As I neared the end of high school, my family started pressuring me about my career choice, as college entrance exams were approaching. My heart and mind yearned for music, my true passion, but my family didn't fully support this decision, arguing that making a living from music, especially classical music in Brazil, was financially challenging. So, in 2022, I left the conservatory to enter the corporate world and help financially at home. In 2022, I enrolled in a technology college, which I will finish by the end of 2024, but the dream of music still lives in me. I feel that my calling is in music, and I can use this gift to bring people closer to God through the beauty and truth present in it.\u003cbr\u003eMy story with my piano began shortly after completing one year at the conservatory. Due to financial constraints that prevented me from acquiring an acoustic model, the possibility of owning one, even with my teacher's recommendation, seemed highly unlikely. Thanks to my teacher and the other piano teachers at the conservatory, there was an effort to find a piano in good condition and at an affordable price. Through conversations with potential sellers, my Polish-Brazilian teacher Donata Madjeska Lange came across a 1962 Brazilian piano being sold by a woman in her neighborhood. The woman selling the piano was Érica, a healthcare professional working at the Butantan Institute, responsible for developing COVID-19 vaccines here in Brazil. The piano had been unused for years, severely out of tune, and with a stiff mechanism. However, my teacher Donata believed that with a complete overhaul and tuning, the instrument would be in great shape, based on her experience. I spoke with Érica, went with my father to her residence, and there I had my first encounter with the piano. It was a dream come true! Despite its poor condition, I saw hope in becoming a better pianist through it. Upon receiving her permission to view and play the piano, she could see my enthusiasm and the performance of some pieces I played at that moment. After playing, she was moved to finally hear that piano being played again. It had belonged to her son, who passed away ten years ago, and they used to play clarinet and piano duets at home when they had the chance. Because of this touching story and also sharing my own piano journey, Érica was touched. She negotiated the price with my father, and the instrument was sold for a significantly lower price than the market value. A few days later, a shipping company delivered it to my home. I cleaned the piano thoroughly (following my teacher's instructions), and for a few months, I played it without any revisions or tuning, thrilled with this new gift from God. And of course, when the opportunity arose, I managed to tune the instrument and recently perform a minor mechanism revision. However, it doesn't hold the tuning at 440 due to its age. My piano brings me immense joy and is how I express and externalize my internal feelings. And the rest, as they say, is history :-) What is your connection to the piano? This was my parents' piano. This is the piano I grew up with. Do you play the piano or want to learn? Yes, I play the piano and so do my siblings and my kids and some of my nieces and nephews. Who will benefit from the restoration if your piano is chosen? 2023 was a rough year. In February my dad died suddenly of a heart attack. He was the main caretaker for our mom who had dementia. Mom died later that year (October 2023). It was a rough year as we juggled taking care of mom and taking care of the estate. So many emotions. As we started to clean out our parents' house I brought the piano to my house so it wouldn't get bumped and hurt as we cleaned. As things got stressful and the grief got to be too much I remember automatically going to the front room in my parent's house to find solace in playing the piano only to remember that it was already gone, moved to my house. I didn't realize how much playing the piano had brought me comfort over the years. Whenever my sister comes to visit she plays and I sing. I can almost hear mom's voice as we sing. Restoring this piano will ensure that we can continue to gather around the piano and come together as a family for many years to come. \u003cbr\u003eMusic was a big part of my parents’ lives. Mom and dad touched countless lives with their talents. I'm not sure who first owned this piano. It was built in 1930. My parents were married in 1963 and they bought it within the first few years of their marriage. That’s how important music was to them. I have memories of playing under this piano as a little child while my mom sang and my dad played the piano. I also have fond memories as a teenager and young adult of gathering around the piano with friends and family and singing. My favorite book is a Rodgers and Hammerstein book with songs from their hits (South Pacific, The King and I etc.). After my siblings and I each got married we would still come back for holidays and Sunday dinners and gather around the piano. We would sing together and then listen to the grandkids play their favorite songs. From my sister: Our family piano has been the center of family life for as long as I can remember. We all learned to play piano on this piano—how well I remember the tap, tap, tap of my mother’s wedding ring on the wood when she was my metronome! Another favorite memory is when the extended family would gather around the piano to sing. My dad or I were generally the accompanists, and we would all sing until we were hoarse. Then there were talent shows where most of the grandchildren played something on the piano. When my dad was in his 80’s he lost the use of most of the fingers on his right hand and couldn’t play like he used to. Every now and then I would slip into the music room during a quiet moment and play something from one of his books of classical piano. He told me later that hearing the piano played brought him great joy. My mother was a beautiful soprano (dad was her accompanist for most of their lives). She had advanced Alzheimer’s when she died last year and I was so glad that I had spent some time in the previous year singing with her at that piano. Whenever she was in good voice we would sing her favorites and record them. Now that my parents are gone, the piano is at my sister’s house. It is so full of memories, but moving it revealed some significant problems that will need to be addressed. It’s been in my family since I was 12 years old. My mom had always wanted to learn to play and when she started looking for a piano, she found this one and fell in love with it. We had never seen a piano so beautiful and ornate and the sound was amazing. When they picked it up it was about 45min away but down a very steep, narrow and windy road down into a river canyon. They managed to get it up a bunch of stairs and out do the house it was in, put it in my dad’s little trailer and brought it to our house (dirt road and all). This piano was amazing right from the start. We lived in a double wide trailer and the piano literally shook the house when it was played because it was so powerful. My dad worked nights and tried to sleep during the day so my mom covered carpet padding with red fabric and put them behind the cut out sections to try to dampen it a bit. I believe that it was the beauty and the power of this piano that inspired me to learn. Before it came home I didn’t have any inkling to play the piano. Once my mom started taking lessons I would go behind her and sit down and play by ear what she was learning to play and I fell in love with piano. After a while I started cleaning my mom’s piano teachers house every week to earn my lessons. I played nearly all day every day, any time I possibly could have my hands on this piano I did. I remember decorating the top of the piano beautifully for Christmas, nearly letting it fall on its face when just me and my mom tried to inch it over a bit. I remember waking my dad up too many times when I was playing, and driving the whole house nuts playing Turkish March and Gypsy Rondo over and over. I remember the piano being my solace, the place I would go when I was upset and needed my heart and soul to be refreshed. I played worship music, hymns and christian piano solos and connected to God while I was playing. I wrote my first songs at this piano. After a few years my piano playing had progressed really far and we were having more and more trouble keeping the piano in tune. The pins were loose and things were just breaking down somewhat. Much to my dismay and even with my immense protesting, my parents decided to give this piano to friends of ours who had two younger kids who wanted to learn piano, and they bought a small Kimball upright for me to play. It kept a tune, but it didn’t sound or play anything like my piano. A number of years past and I got married, I took the Kimball piano with me, but on the phone with my mom one day she mentioned in passing that our friends were going to get rid of my piano. I told her, “Yes they are! To me and me only! I want it back!” She called them super quickly to make sure that they hadn’t already given it to someone else, and thankfully they hadn’t, so I was able to rescue it and bring it back to where it belonged. Getting it back, the pins were even looser now, some of the keys had started to stick and really it wasn’t playable. I just knew though that I would keep that piano with me until I could get it fixed, no matter how long that took. There were two moves in there where we had to move two pianos, really testing how much my friends liked me! And then finally when my husband and I joined The Salvation Army, I decided to only keep my big heirloom piano because it was too much to move two pianos and usually the places we went had pianos at the churches I could play. Since joining The Salvation Army we have moved our piano 4 times, worth it every time. As it is now, it pretty much is a beautiful furniture piece and conversation piece. I tell everyone “This piano means so much to me, I will keep it with me and keep moving it when we move even until retirement when I can actually afford to restore it.” And while that’s entirely true, deep down I’m always trying to figure out how I can afford to restore it sooner. This gentleman had taken care of his disabled adult children who fostered several animals, including dozens of cats. The cats unfortunately weren't kind to the outside of the piano and scratched up the top and legs. We were told at one point they lost a large snake (I believe it was a Boa) and found the snake shedding it's skin inside the piano. The daughter of the owner told us the story of this antique full grand piano. According to her, the piano had a twin and the former president of Utah State University had them imported from France for his daughters and it used to be located in the president's mansion in Cache Valley. From there it was passed down to family members (the older gentleman we bought it from was a extended family member and an accomplished musician). My husband played the piano for the grieving family when we looked at it, and they loved hearing it played so well and were thrilled to sell it to us. My husband, who initially wanted a really nice piano and was quite particular for the perfect instrument in his search, fell in love with this beat up instrument and told me immediately that we HAD to rescue it. Ever since then, we've loved this piano despite it taking up most of our living room and needing a rebuild and cosmetic refurbish. This piano has given our family countless opportunities to make cherished memories, from Christmas caroling, playing duets with our beginner piano students and kids, to recording a last family song for our dying grandpa to listen to, hours before he passed on when we couldn't be with him in person due to the Covid quarantine (see video). Her older sister spent most of her free time terrorizing my mom and she needed an outlet. This piano was the perfect gift for her and she was able to find a love for classical music. My dad moved the family around so much that my mom was never able to get herself a piano or get back her piano from her parents. However when they finally settled down in UT country she wanted to eventually get her piano back. Once her father passed away, her mother decided to sell their house and my mom was able to get back the piano she loves so much. My brothers and I learned how to play on that piano. I ended up become a fairly prolific musician because of my time spent learning and loving to play on the piano, and participated in a lot of groups in high school and college. From a young age, having this piano around filled me with peace and really connected me with a part of my personality. It taught me how to express myself and feel my emotions deeply. One time I was even so proud of my piano that I literally took a pocket knife and carved into the side of the piano labeling it \"Z’s piano.\" My parents were mortified, but kind about it. Its bright tone is great for my solo Old-Time piano style. My buddy Steve and I have rescued a handful of local pianos over the last 10 years and this one is the shining star. Steve had hoped I would take this one when my wife Katie and I moved into our first home together. However the look of this piano doesn't quite fit into my wife's aesthetic---dirty old brown things do not fit into our decor. She prefers cool tones (greys, whites, pearl---no brown, yellow or warm tones). So for now, my piano is still at my buddy Steve's place and I can be seen playing old hymns and other songs on it on YouTube (@CarlOlsonOldTimePiano). I have heard Mason \u0026amp; Hamlin's of this vintage were over-engineered and based on my experience with this one, I would have to agree.
