How 3D Printing is Revolutionizing Piano Restoration | Piano Technicians Guild Presentation

Brigham Larson Pianos

In my work restoring heirloom and historic instruments, I’m often faced with a challenge: how do you replace a piano part that hasn’t been manufactured in over 100 years?

Hosting this PTG (Piano Technicians Guild) presentation here at my shop was an honor.  I shared how we’re using 3D printing piano parts as a modern solution for historic piano restoration.

Why 3D Printing is a Game Changer for Piano Restoration

Most of the pianos I restore are 100–150 years old, and many of their parts are completely obsolete.  With 3D printing, I can design and create exact replicas of missing or damaged parts—from unique back checks to carved case legs—right here in my piano shop.

We use two different types of 3D printing: Filament printing (for strong, fast-turnaround structural parts) & Resin printing (for incredibly detailed action components and decorative trim).

This technology allows us to reproduce everything from ornate filigree panels to custom case hardware.  It’s not just about fixing a piano, it’s about preserving its authenticity for the next generation.

Combining Craftsmanship With Innovation

While 3D printing piano parts is a new tool in our process, traditional craftsmanship remains at the heart of what we do.  We still rebuild actions by hand, refinish cabinets to period-correct finishes, and preserve original soundboards, plates, and bridges whenever possible.

3D printing simply gives us another way to ensure every restoration is accurate, durable, and true to the piano’s original design.
