Bringing a 19th-Century Camp & Sons Upright Back to Life

Historic Rebuild + Nationwide Piano Restoration & Moving Services
I recently finished a 1890 Camp & Sons upright rebuild piano project that I’m excited to share. This particular piano was built in the late 1800s and has stayed in one family for more than a century — generation after generation learning, playing, and creating memories on it. When the current owners brought it into our piano shop, the cabinet was in rough shape, the action was completely worn, and it hadn’t produced a good tone in decades — but the heart of the piano was still there.
Like many of the heirloom pianos we restore, the family wanted to keep everything that was historically significant — especially the original ivory keytops. We refinished the entire case in a period-appropriate finish, replated the hardware in-house, and installed new felt accents to restore that 19th-century aesthetic. Then we completely rebuilt the inside: refinished plate, new strings and pins, new hammers, shanks, dampers, bridge caps, and bass apron — everything needed for a full Camp and Sons upright rebuild piano done right.
When I finished the final tuning and voicing, it played and sounded like a brand new concert-ready instrument. That’s the beauty of these historic pianos — as long as the structure and design are solid, a proper rebuild can bring them back to their full potential.
