Washington Heirloom 1931 Steck Aeolian Duo-Art Upright Piano Restoration + QRS Player Installation

Washington Heirloom 1931 Steck Aeolian Duo-Art Upright Piano Restoration + QRS Player Installation

Brigham Larson Pianos

When a piano has been in a family for generations, it carries far more than music. It holds memories, milestones, and meaning. This 1931 Steck Aeolian Duo-Art upright came to us from Washington as a treasured heirloom—rich in history, but in need of a complete revival.

Our task was both technical and deeply respectful: restore the integrity of the instrument while preserving its historic identity.

A Legacy of Innovation

The Duo-Art system was one of the most sophisticated reproducing piano technologies of the early 20th century. At a time when recorded music was still in its infancy, these instruments could replicate nuanced performances by great pianists of the era.

Steck pianos, built under the Aeolian Company, were known for their musical warmth and solid construction. Combining this craftsmanship with the Duo-Art system made these uprights remarkable instruments in their day.

Nearly a century later, however, time had taken its toll.

The Rebuild Process

This project required a comprehensive rebuild to restore the piano’s structural and musical integrity.

Structural & Mechanical Restoration

We addressed aging components throughout the instrument—ensuring long-term stability, proper function, and reliable performance. A rebuild at this level is about far more than replacing parts; it’s about restoring balance, responsiveness, and tonal potential.

Action & Tone Work

The action was carefully rebuilt and regulated to provide a responsive, expressive touch. Each adjustment was made with the goal of bringing clarity and warmth back to the instrument’s voice while preserving its original character.

Cabinet Preservation

Maintaining the historic aesthetic of a 1931 upright is essential. The cabinet was refreshed with careful attention to detail, ensuring it retained its vintage presence while presenting beautifully in a modern home.

Bridging 1931 and Today: QRS Installation

While honoring the original Duo-Art legacy, the family chose to integrate modern player technology through a QRS system installation.

This upgrade allows the piano to:

  • Perform beautifully as a fully restored acoustic instrument
  • Play back high-quality performances with modern digital precision
  • Offer convenient access to a vast music library
  • Blend historic craftsmanship with contemporary lifestyle needs

In many ways, installing QRS technology continues the spirit of what Duo-Art represented in its time—innovation in musical experience.

The result is a seamless combination of past and present: a 1931 heirloom that now functions with 21st-century capability.

Why Restoration Matters

Projects like this are about more than rebuilding a piano. They are about stewardship.

An heirloom instrument deserves more than replacement—it deserves renewal. By restoring rather than replacing, families retain the emotional connection, the visual presence, and the historical significance of their piano while gaining reliability and performance that can last another generation.

This Steck Aeolian Duo-Art upright now stands ready for its next chapter—continuing to make music, tell stories, and gather family around it once again.

If you have a vintage player piano or family heirloom that feels tired but meaningful, restoration may be the bridge between preserving history and creating new memories.
